| Dürer 1515 Dürer was not working from nature when he portrayed this armored and scaly creature labeled Rhinocerus and dated 1515. Documentary evidence proves that the rhinoceros had been sent to the King of Portugal by an Indian sultan in that year. Valentine Ferdinant, a Moravian painter living in Portugal, sent an account and a sketch of the animal to a friend of Dürer's. The reptilian appearance of the rhinoceros may be the result of Dürer's misunderstanding of Ferdinand's description of the animal's outer covering. |
